The “Premium Talk” between Masato Kato (script writer), and Nobuo Mizuta (director) was held at 12:00 pm on November 15 (Sat.). The MC was Yukiko Suzuki (cinema essayist).
The audience welcomed Kato and Mizuta with applause. Suddenly, director Mizuta shouted “Oh!”. Kato said to Mizuta “What happened?” Mizuta answered “My boss is sitting in the middle of the audience. What should I do, Mr. Kato?” This made the audience laugh, and the talk show started with a friendly atmosphere.
Kato and Mizuta have been jurors for the Competition, but they met for the first time in this Hiroshima International Film Festival. They talked about each other, director Mizuta said “Unlike Mr. Kato, I always make funny films.” Kato said, “Mr. Mizuta’s films have thrilling appeal that I can’t create. It would be fun that I also create such films”. They seemed to try to form a new friendship with each other at this opportunity.
The one-hour talk show was extremely exciting. They talked about various topics, for example, a role of a film script, a difference between films and TV dramas, a difference caused by male writers and female writers, and advice for people who would like to write a script.
In the session of questions and answers (the latter half of the talk show), one person asked director Mizuta, “I watched almost all the films made by director Mizuta. I think director Mizuta treats child actors as professional actors, and successfully brings out their talents. How do you teach them performance?” Director Mizuta was impressed by this question, saying “you checked such a detail point!”, and offered a handshake. Director Mizuta answered to the question, with an introduction, “My instruction on performance does not matter”, “I basically choose a child actor by an audition. During an audition, I share my rule for an audition with staff, i.e., “never leave a life of a young child actor with a wound or negative effect”, If such a rule is shared with each other, all of the staff will keep remembering the rule during shooting. Under such a circumstance, a child will react to my enthusiasm.” The audience was deeply impressed by director Mizuta’s answer.
Mr. Kato gave advice for people who would like to write a script, and finally Mr. Kato said, “if you ask me to do a workshop about scripts, I’ll do that!”, On hearing this comment, Representative Kyoko Heya, “I make an offer of the next year’s workshop now!” Mr. Kato said with smiling, “I hope, this workshop becomes an opportunity for a person to start writing a script, and, in the future, he/she becomes a script writer, and then create a work that will be screened in this film festival”.
One- hour passed fast and the friendly and meaningful talk show ended with warm applauses.
