The "International Short Film Competition Group A" was held on November 24th (Fri.) from 14:00 at NTT CRED Hall No.1.
The three nominated films were " VANIA ON LIMA STREET" by BAYU PRIHANTORO FILEMON, "Christmas in Summer" by LEE Gahong, and "Girls Got Goals" by SATO Miku. After the screening, RCC Broadcasting announcer, TAMURA Yuri led a talk show with the three directors.
“VANIA ON LIMA STREET" Director: BAYU PRIHANTORO FILEMON Through this film, he said he wanted to convey the fact that there was a discriminatory atmosphere in Indonesia around 1998, and assaults against women of Chinese descent. The motif of "physical scars" across multiple generations also suggests "psychological scars”. He had great difficulty in casting Chinese-Indonesian actors during the filming in Indonesia. The director is currently working on the script for his first feature film.
“Christmas in Summer" Director: LEE Gahong The inspiration for this film came from an encounter with a mysterious man who somehow knew where Director LEE was going when she was traveling alone. The event of marriage tells us that we have to face family members that we do not normally care about, and that there are emotions that we have to sort through and overcome in our new beginnings. Director LEE, who shot the film in both summer and winter, recalled that it was a miracle that she was able to get a great scene with a heavy snowfall at the end of the shooting deadline, when she was about to give up.
“Girls Got Goals" Director: SATO Miku Director SATO is currently based in the Netherlands. While researching the past Olympics in the wake of the Tokyo Olympics, she learned that a Jewish gymnast named Elka existed in the Netherlands. After making phone calls and sending letters throughout the Netherlands, she tracked down Elka's daughter and granddaughter and asked for their cooperation in filming the event. The Director SATO, who digs deep into historical facts to make films that are relevant to the present day, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to screen this film in Hiroshima at a time when war is actually happening in Palestine, and she hopes that this issue will be resolved as soon as possible.
