There is always light somewhere in the darkness Screening of “El canto de las moscas” and Talk Show
On Thursday, November 23rd, at 18:30, Yokogawa Cinema hosted a screening of "El canto de las moscas" and a talk show by Director Ricardo SOTO.
The Mexican film "El canto de las moscas" is set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution that took place between 1910 and 1923, and depicts two sisters who are waiting for their father to return home from war in the middle of a war zone. The film depicts life in extreme conditions where one steps outside the house and one does not even know if one is alive or dead, and the sisters become mentally independent through a moment of happiness and an encounter with a soldier. The war under the revolution and the emotions of the sisters were expressed with an overall dark tone and the sound of mosquito wings.
The screening was followed by a talk show by Director SOTO, with Yasuda Women's University Associate Professor John McLean as a listener. Director SOTO received the Jury Award in the International Short Film Competition at the Hiroshima International Film Festival 2019, and this was his first feature film. In "El canto de las moscas", Director SOTO expresses his wish that, given the current state of the world, by learning about the past, we can learn about the present and avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.
The Director said, "By watching historical films, we establish our identity and build our nation”. What has not changed and what is changing after the war? Director SOTO's great-grandfather actually participated in the revolution, and the house used for the filming was his great-grandfather's house. (Incidentally, the area around the set is said to be a very dangerous place with rampant mafia activity...) In the midst of such upheaval, he said he wanted to convey through "El canto de las moscas" that there is always light somewhere even in the darkness.
