A Cambodian virtuoso, director Rithy Panh, who continues to question the tragedy which happened in his country through the lens to the screen, joins us as a jury member

We are delighted to welcome director Rithy Panh, who is highly regarded all over the world for his mainly documentary films, as a jury member of the international short film competition. “Exile”(2016), will be screened on the second day of the film festival. This film portrays the Khmer Rouge era in Cambodia, and it had its world premier at the Cannes Film Festival last year. “THE SEA WALL”(2008), will also be screened at Hiroshima City Cinematographic and Audio-Visual Library in 35-millimeter film, which will be shown as the Japan premier.

Rithy Panh was born in 1964 in Cambodia (Phnom Penh) and had experienced hardship in the camp life under the Khmer Rouge era. He is highly regarded all over the world for documentary films with the theme of Khmer Rouge, such as “The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine S21”(2002) and “The Missing Picture”(2013), which received the Grand Prix award in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival, and was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He also contributes to Cambodian audio and visual culture, establishing the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center and the Cambodian Film Commission.
