“The DIAGONALE Selection”

lecancre_web

For the second year, the Hiroshima International Film Festival is collaborating with The Cinémathèque Française, in France, to introduce lesser-known French films to Japan, and open up new horizons.
HIFF 2016 will feature some films from DIAGONALE, a French film studio founded 40 years ago in Paris.

DIAGONALE, which Paul Vecchiali founded to create films free from the interference of major studios, was the first truly independent film studio in France. Films made by DIAGONALE reveal another kind of French film, and a historically unique style, even today.

For “the DIAGONALE Selection,” we will screen 6 films including Vecchiali’s classics, “Femmes femmes,” and “En haut des marches,” as well as his latest work, “Le Cancre,” and Jean-Claude Biette’s “Le Théâtre des matières,” “La Partenza,” and “Ecco ho letto.”

These 6 films, which have rarely been presented outside of France, will be screened in 35mm film at the Hiroshima City Cinematographic and Audio-visual Library; “L’Archipel des amours,” “Femmes femmes,” “En haut des marches,” “Les Belles Manières,” “Simone Barbès ou la Vertu,” and “Beau Temps mais orageux en fin de journèe.”

In addition to the film screening, Director Paul Vecchiali, and Françoise Lebrun from “L’Archipel des amours,” “En haut des marches,” and “Le Cancre” will be attending the festival as guest speakers.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity!

This film has been restored by La Cinémathèque française.
