The Workshop by Susano Katabuchi was held at NTT CRED Hall No.2 at 13:30 on November 23rd (MC: Tomoko Nishizaki, Hiroshima Film Commission). It has been held for the last 7 years.
He has concerns about that the release of his new film “In This Corner of the World” (Extended version), which has been postponed, and he showed up with saying, “I have never felt such a nervous feeling before,” which made people laugh.
He recognizes adding some animations to the original work as breathing life into the characters. Sometimes, he handles more than 100 characters in one scene, so he makes his ideas up with careful details in every piece of scenes.
Even though he has been busy since around 2016 like that, he does not have time to eat, but he came to Hiroshima this year as well. He reacted to requests from his fans who came there. Every time precious scenes showed up on the screen, the hall was filled with applause. Fans are so familiar with the movie and they were trying to remember every piece of the scenes. He may have felt a big expectation from the fans towards the new movie.
Compared with the previous one, the movie expresses how Suzu struggles with her life with intertwining her life and other people’s lives. There is something showing up by adding various people’s view. He said “each person has thoughts and life, and the thing that destroys them is war. I would like to tell new perspectives towards wars thorough the movie.” It is not the story which was simply made 30 minutes longer, but it will definitely be the one which has ideas of the people who made this movie.
The workshop which was filled with an amicable atmosphere finished. The movie has the story we have never known about Suzu. We are looking forward to when the new movie will release.
