Many companies including Mazda, a Hiroshima, Japan automaker, are in the Guanajuato State, so the State and Hiroshima prefecture have a friendly alliance. Exchange with HIFF started with the proposal of Sarah Hock, an executive director of Guanajuato International Film Festival (GIFF) who felt this kind of relationship. In 2016, Japan was the featured country of GIFF and about 70 Japanese movies were screened, including "Sweet Bean", directed by Kawase Naomi. She was invited as a guest, and screening and workshops were held.
