International Short Film Competition Post-Screening Interview (4) “Fisher Boy” Director NAM Dong-hyun

Q. There was a silent scene towards the end of the film. In that scene, the things that the main character YU Isu touched that day were shown. What did you want to express in such a production?

A. This scene was set up as a transfer of the child's afterimages and leftovers from the previous days. It was difficult to set the time of day because it was an event that happened throughout the day. Also, the music was turned off so that the time of day would not be identifiable.

Q. YU Isu found water for his grandfather and did his best to bring it back, but he was unable to give it to his grandfather. I guessed that he was taken to the hospital from the ambulance scene, but why did you dare to make the story end without being able to give it to him?

A. Originally, YU Isu was told by his mother on the phone not to go outside. Despite this, he went outside for his grandfather's sake, and that was the basis of the story. Also, his grandfather was scheduled to go to the hospital that day, so YU couldn't give it to him.

Q. Did you give acting coaching to the child actor who was acting for the first time?

A. I explained to him the lines of movement and where to move during filming. However, I placed importance on the child's understanding of his own emotions, so he was able to think and act on his own.

Q. Are there any directors or actors you would like to work with?

A. I would like to work with Japanese actor YAKUSHO Koji. I would like to feature him in a film about older men that I would like to make.

Message from Director NAM Dong-hyun to the Hiroshima International Film Festival:
There was a time when HEYA Kyoko, the president of this film festival, cried at the opening ceremony, and some of the audience members shed tears as well. When I saw that scene, I strongly felt the connection between the people involved in the Hiroshima International Film Festival and the audience. Hiroshima is an area with a painful history, but I thought it was great that people living in the present day can relate to each other and spend time together.
