Shuji (Miyasako Hiroyuki), who's been gone for years, suddenly returns to the Akechi family home. After his arrival the ordinary, but happy family is thrown into chaos. Grandfather dies, father has tons of debts, and younger sister Tomoko (Tsumiki Miho) breaks up with her fiance, blaming it on Shuji's lies. Her big brother once told her a lie when they were small, about a secret place where wild berries could be found. Shuji tells her it was not a lie, and even takes her to the place. On the way there, Tomoko runs away from Shuji and calls the police. She knows Shuji is a con man and decides to sell out her own brother to the police. When she arrives back at home, she finds the dining room table covered with wild berries.

Miwa Nishikawa
Born July 8th, 1974 in Hiroshima, upon graduation from Waseda University, worked on the staff of Hirokazu Koreeda's After Life (99). She the worked as a freelance director, and in 2002 debuted as a writer-director with Wild Berries. Her second feature, Sway (06), was a long-running hit that won awards both in Japan and abroad, showing at the Cannes Film Festival Directors Fortnight. Her third film, Dear Doctor (09), was shown in competion at the Montreal World Film Festival. Her fourth film, Dreams for Sale, premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. 'The Long Excuse' is her 5th film and the original book was nominated for a 2015 Naoki Award, and for the 2016 Japan Booksellers Award.
