What is the Hiroshima International Film Festival (HIFF)? (2)~ Introduction of the program ~

Based on the concept of "The film festival focuses on positive and inspirational films from all around the globe.", our film festival was reborn as “Hiroshima International Film Festival” in 2014. We carry out various contents every year aiming to be a unique film festival only in Hiroshima, a symbol of reconstruction and hope.

◆Special Screenings
In addition to the works of the guest director visiting Japan for the first time, we screen films as World/Japan Premiere and domestic or overseas selections. Special feature screenings are shown the works that juries supervise, produce, and appear as an actor. We also screen features related to guests. We invite filmmakers who are active not only in film industry in Japan, but also in the world to hold a talk show. We have also recommended films from the Guanajuato International Film Festival that we have signed a partnership with since 2016, as well as screenings of films recommended by film festival in various countries.

◆The International Short Film Competition
Screening 6 nominated films (lengths of less than 30 minutes) gathered from all around the globe as "positive and inspirational films", in a competition form (two-part composition); we also hold talk shows with guests.

We invite filmmakers who are active at the forefront as a jurist to select the "Hiroshima Grand Prix Award" and "Jury Award" by strict examination. The "Audience Award" is decided by the audience's vote after screening on the festival day.

The "Hiroshima Grand Prix Award" (Winning prize 300,000 yen and an Award trophy)
The winner is chosen by the judgment of the jury and the audience.

The "Jury Award" (Award trophy)
The Jury selects an inspired work and awards it.

The "Audience Award" (Award trophy)
Ballot forms are distributed at the venue and the prize is awarded to works receiving the highest audience rating.

◆Hiroshima EYE
We screen works by filmmakers who are related to Hiroshima and new and old films shot in Hiroshima. There are screenings of project films produced by Hiroshima Film Commission and screening the works of Award Winners of the Annual Competition of Art in Hiroshima prefecture organized by Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum. We also hold a talk show for this.

◆Cinémathèque française
This is a joint program with the French film organization, Cinémathèque française, since 2015. In collaboration with cultural groups and organizations related to France, such as Hiroshima City Cinematographic and Audio-Visual Library and Institut français du Japon, we introduce historically important classical works and young directors’ works with their activities.
