The Essence of Film: Visualize Something Unseen and Unknown Teach-in by Director ISHII
On November 25th (Saturday) at 6 p.m., there was a teach-in session led by Director ISHII Yuya at NTT CRED Hall No.2. Earlier on the same day at 1:45 p.m., the screening and talk show for Dir. ISHII's latest film "The Moon" were held at NTT CRED Hall No.1, marking Dir. ISHII's second appearance of the day. The interviewer was freelance personality Mr. KIMURA Michita.
The audience mainly consisted of young participants, including students from Sotoku High School who were present for the interview. Dir. ISHII shared anecdotes about a lecture he had delivered at a vocational school. He sometimes engaged with high school students, posing questions to them throughout the session.Dir. ISHII revealed that the filming and editing of his next project have been completed, and the production team is currently working on CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) and sound design. Although he didn't disclose many details about the next project, he gave a hint that it will be a groundbreaking film dealing with virtual spaces unlike anything done before.
Dir. ISHII also shared his feeling about virtual spaces, expressing that while he doesn't wholly endorse living in a virtual world, he understands the feeling of people seeking refuge there, yet he perceives it risky. He mentioned he avoids indulging in gaming or video streaming, because he feels that once he gets addicted to them, it's hard to break free.
The questions from the audience primarily centered on the film "The Moon." Regarding this movie, Dir. ISHII expressed his desire for the young generation, saying, "As you grow older, it might seem to be good that you quickly judge things, but I would like you to face things that you don't immediately understand. You'll encounter many things that are difficult to comprehend, but that's precisely the issue you need to confront taking time. If you've come across this film by some chance, I hope you'd try to perceive something. Even if your impression is 'I don't get it' or `it's uncomfortable,' that's okay."
To the question about why the movie was rated PG-12 by stating, Dir. ISHII responded "There were two reasons for the rating. One is the scene where a character smokes marijuana, and the other is the scene where non-resistant people were killed and injured."
"The essence of movies is to visualize something unseen and unknown, to shake up established facts. However, there is a growing number of creators who are afraid of criticism and cannot express their thoughts. I can't stop wondering how such fear of making mistakes and the restrictive atmosphere that doesn't allow for free expression create such a detrimental environment," Dir. ISHII raised questions about current trends in society, emphasizing the importance of free expression.« “Nocturne” Screening and Talk Show: A Family Story Connected by Music―Seeking Warmth in Solitude, Loneliness, and the Silence of Darkness― “Shades of the Heart” Screening and Talk Show »
