Films that have disappeared long ago, becoming legends and rumors, fractured images that float around like phantoms, are beginning to come back. These once vanished phantoms of Korean cinema, some appearing quite damaged, are now returning with names like discovery, collection, and restoration. <Phantoms of the Archive> is an omnibus project comprised of four short films produced by director Kim Jong Kwan to honor the Korean Film Archive's 40th anniversary. It is simultaneously a record of a film institution that has worked tirelessly to remember and restore forgotten periods of Korean cinema as well as fleeting thoughts conveyed through images portraying the many discoveries in Korean film history. They are like an individual's dreamlike fantasy trip through the unknown world of lost Korean cinema. The four shorts, <A Hat's Journey>, <The Watch>, <Remnants of the Deceased>, and <Classic Cinema>, each represent discovery, restoration, preservation, and screening respectively, and are collectively the phantoms that wander around the film archive. Let us go on an somewhat bizarre journey with them.
