SANADA Soujiro
Japanese film director, philosopher, and former punk rocker.
Born in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, SANADA holds a Master’s degree from Kobe University and is Japan’s only researcher specializing in the German thinker Oswald Spengler. A former punk rocker, he was the vocalist and guitarist for the band “Ape to Ape: SoundsorChestA,” performing at major festivals such as COUNT DOWN JAPAN.
SANADA currently lectures on philosophy at various institutions, including Hiroshima Jogakuin Junior & Senior High School, and for non-profit organizations.
After his directorial debut in 2021 with Mottomo Junsui na Q (The Purest Q), he has been active across multiple fields. Notably, he has appeared on television as a commentator, written and directed the music video for SATO Koichi’s Life is too short, and given lectures on philosophy. In recognition of his versatile talent, he was selected as one of “25 New Faces for 2025” by Weekly Playboy.
In 2024, his first feature film Okamoto Manta, which he wrote, directed, and scored, was nominated in the “Rebellion with a Cause” section at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia—one of the world's 15 major film festivals.
In 2025, he achieved a groundbreaking milestone by winning the Grand Prix in the Cine Level Competition at the Munich International Film Festival in Germany, becoming the first Japanese filmmaker to receive this honor.
