<Synopsis>

MIRRORLIAR FILMS is a short film project produced by ITO Chikara, ABE Shinnosuke , and YAMADA Takayuki. Since its launch in 2020, the project has involved a wide range of filmmakers, from renowned creators to open-call participants, and has released over 50 short films in theaters. The project has also collaborated with filming locations to contribute to regional development.
The latest installment, “”MIRRORLIAR FILMS Season 8″”, developed in collaboration with Okayama Prefecture, features six short films. Okayama-born MEGUMI joins as producer, MATSUDA Miyuki participates as director, and “”ALI,”” directed by Bangladeshi filmmaker Adnan Al Rajeev — recipient of a Special Mention at the 78th Cannes Film Festival — is also included in the lineup.
The films include “”The empty vessel “” (dir. MATSUDA Miyuki / starring HARADA Mieko ), which depicts the emotional connection between a young man working at a pachinko parlor and a woman who frequently visits the establishment; “”The Breath of the Blue Whale”” (dir. SAWATARI Eri / starring HAMAO Noritaka, produced by MEGUMI), the story of a woman who has lost her emotions and a man trying to reconnect with her through AI matching; “”ALI”” (dir. Adnan Al Rajeev), following a Bangladeshi youth pursuing his dream of becoming a singer; “”Love Bones”” (dir. SETSUDA Tomohiro), a quiet love story between teachers in a seaside town; “”Falling in Love with A♯”” (dir. HIROTA Kohei), portraying an accidental encounter triggered by a piano tuner visiting a long-established kimono shop; and “”CUT!”” (dir. ANDO Shun), set on the set of a low-budget film, exploring a young actor whose sense of reality and performance begins to blur. Together, these six films present a diverse array of stories crafted by a variety of directors.

    The directors of MIRRORLIAR FILMS Season 8 include Adnan Al Rajeev, a rising talent from Bangladesh and a Special Mention recipient at the 78th Cannes Film Festival; MATSUDA Miyuki, an actress who is also active as a singer, photographer, and filmmaker; SETSUDA Tomohiro, a filmmaker primarily working on TV commercials and web movies; HIROTA Kohei, a freelance director whose works have been screened at various domestic and international film festivals; ANDO Shun, a film editor and director collaborating with communities across North America and Japan in films, music videos, and commercials; and SAWATARI Eri, a visual artist and art director working across commercials, music videos, and installations.

    YAMADA Takayuki

    Born on October 20, 1983, in Kagoshima Prefecture, YAMADA Takayuki made his acting debut in 1999. His career breakthrough came in 2003 with his first leading role in the television drama Water Boys.

    YAMADA has since become a leading figure in Japanese cinema and television, headlining a string of major productions such as Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World, Train Man, the Dark Money Ushijima series, the Yoshihiko the Brave series, The Naked Director, and Eleven Rebels. His performance in the film True Identity earned him the 48th Japan Academy Film Prize for Outstanding Supporting Actor.

    Beyond acting, he is a key creative force, serving as a producer and director for the filmmaker discovery project MIRRORLIAR FILMS.

    Audiences can look forward to seeing him next in the film New Interpretation: Bakumatsu Den (scheduled for release on December 19) and in the lead role of the Netflix series Quiztopia.

  • FUJII Michihito

    FUJII Michihito

    Born in 1986, FUJII Michihito is a graduate of Nihon University’s College of Art. After graduating, he founded the film collective Babel Label in 2010 and made his commercial film debut in 2014 with Oh! Father, an adaptation of a novel by ISAKA Kotaro.

    His film The Journalist (2019) was a critical triumph, winning six awards at the 43rd Japan Academy Film Prize, including Best Picture, among numerous other accolades.

    Director FUJII has since maintained a prolific output, directing acclaimed films such as We Are (2018), Day and Night (2019), The Brightest Roof in the Universe (2020), A Family (2021), The Last 10 Years (2022), Village (2023), Hard Days (2023), and 18×2 Beyond Youthful Days (2024). His television work includes the series Avalanche (2021) and Informer (2023), as well as the Netflix originals The Journalist (2022) and The Parades (2024).
