On Friday, November 28th, starting at 11:45 AM, the screening of “Shikemoku, Kuzu and Hanabi” took place at the Edion Kamiyacho Hall.
This film was entirely shot on location in Hiroshima Prefecture. Set in modern society where life feels difficult, the characters each carry their own worries and emptiness. Amidst this, the film depicts how they come to know themselves and others through chance encounters, growing in the process.
Following the screening, a talk show was held with Director Kentaro Yamagishi and actor Yumi Endo. Producer Yuichi Mizunoue served as the moderator.
The first topic was Director Yamagishi and Ms. Endo’s connection to Hiroshima. Ms. Endo shared, “It was a city I always wanted to visit. During filming, I felt the warmth of the people of Hiroshima.” Director Yamagishi added, “This was my first time in Hiroshima Prefecture for filming. The schedule was tight during production, so I’m looking forward to sightseeing this time.”
Ms. Endo plays the main character, Sueko Sugiyama, in this film. She mentioned finding many parallels between the character and her own past self. Director Yamagishi explained the film’s intent: “Even someone like Sueko, who has no dreams or a lover, has her own sense of justice and conviction. By portraying a character like her, I wanted to acknowledge that personality.”

The talk show included a Q&A session with audience members who had seen the film. When asked about the frequent smoking scenes, Director Yamagishi replied, “I felt the socially unacceptable, outdated vibe suited Sueko perfectly.” The film also features impressive fireworks scenes, as referenced in the title. During filming, it was so difficult to ignite the fireworks that it caused considerable trouble. Additionally, filming took place last December when it was so cold that people’s mouths froze shut, and a stove had to be prepared urgently. The behind-the-scenes stories shared created a warm atmosphere throughout the event.

The film is scheduled to open at Ikebukuro Cinema Rosa starting January 31st next year. Regarding this highly anticipated work, Director Yamagishi stated, “It might not be a flashy film, but I believe it’s one where you can discover and notice many things, so I hope you enjoy it.” Ms. Endo concluded with a smile, saying, “I’m happy to be back in Hiroshima. I’m relieved that so many people came to see it.” The talk show ended with a resounding round of applause from the audience.
