Story, images, time management! Perfectionist director loves his
wife.
Many people have already asked the director, who is male, why he chose to portray the story of a mother and daughter? The director's father was in the military, and he has three sisters. He grew up as the only boy in the family. He was obviously raised differently from his sisters and was asked to be strong as a man to protect them, and the intimacy between his mother and sisters is something he never experienced, which is why he chose it as his subject matter.
When I asked him if he had a model because it was an experience he did not have, he told me that he had a friend who works in the film industry, and in Indonesia, when people are in this business, they are too busy to take care of their homes and children, so they send their children to an Islamic boarding school. The story went on to say that parents believe that if they put their children in that school, children will grow up to be successful, learning what they need to learn in school on behalf of their parents, but things are not that easy and unexpected things happen.
In the scene where the mother, Erni, strongly warns the daughter to focus on her goals and study hard instead of having a boyfriend, he says that this scene shows that in Indonesia today, women are expected to study and pursue their career on equal footing with men. The mother is a single mother who does not reveal her father to her daughter in order to cause conflict between the two and make the story more dramatic.
When I told him that the images were beautiful and the colors used were pretty, he told me that the shooting was done with only one camera and one light, yet it was because the camera was the latest ARRI ALEXA 35mm. He was particular about the colors and told me that the mother Erni's clothes are yellow to represent her warmth, and her bag when she meets her daughter is bright red because it symbolizes danger and the letter at issue is in the bag.
The film was shot in 11 hours, but they spent two months preparing and rehearsing in advance. He has never omitted this process because he believes that if the preparation is perfect in advance, there is no need to worry about the shooting. As a result, the shooting was able to be completed in one day.
When asked about Hiroshima and the Hiroshima International Film Festival, he said that after seeing “Love Song for Hiroshima” this time, he felt that this film should be the opening film. Hiroshima is not just one city, because people still carry the history of tragedy in their hearts. When he went to the A-bomb memorial park early this morning, he came across an old man with a cane sitting on a bench, just quietly shedding tears, and he couldn't help but take a picture of the scene. He wondered what was in the heart of the old man who was shedding tears at that place at 6:30 in the morning, and he felt that there might still be trauma in this city. He had learned about Hiroshima and Nagasaki in school classes and had seen the movie “Oppenheimer,” and had only a passing knowledge of the place where the atomic bomb was dropped, however, it was very significant to come to this place and feel what he felt.
Finally, he thanked the Hiroshima International Film Festival for the warm welcome he received and the committee members for their kindness, saying that he was truly happy to be here and that he would like to come back next time as an audience with his wife, stating so with a smile.
