“What it means to be a survivor cannot be put into words. To live on, to make contact with this irradiation, for which there may be no cause, no knowledge, but from which there is no protection. Evil radiates. It hurts – even later generations. But beyond this pain lies innocence.” (Rithy Panh)

“Natsu Shojo” [A Girl and Summer] is a captivating story depicting hardships faced by Hiroshima atomic bomb survivors set on a small island in Japan’s inland sea. Based on Akira Hayasaka’s “Yumechi-Nikki” [Yumechi Diary], the story starts to unfold when a roof tile, partially melted in Hiroshima’s atomic blast, is brought to the island. The appearance of a mysterious young girl draws Mamoru, a 12-year-old boy, into a fantastical world and beckons painful memories of Hiroshima for his parents.

Peace Park was called the Nakajima District before the atomic bomb. We restored Nakajima Honmachi to its former glory in virtual reality (VR). Reconstructing Nakajima Honmachi in VR required a lot of materials and testimonies from that time. Enter the Taishoya kimono store (currently Hiroshima Rest House). Enjoy freely walking around the city with VR and see how life used to be.

<Story>
Mitsunori Yagawa (Shiro Sano), a piano tuner and second-generation ‘hibakusha,’ has been entrusted with a number of pianos pulled from the ruins of the atomic blast that mercilessly ripped through Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Hiroshima atomic pianos, or Hiroshima pianos for short, were found less than three kilometers from the blast epicenter. Yagawa devotes his time to repairing, tuning, and taking these pianos the length and breadth of Japan in his 4-ton truck. Nanako Eguchi (Tomu Muto), raised in Tokyo, is a university student studying kindergarten education. She is considering a future as a kindergarten teacher. Nanako learns that her grandmother’s piano was a Hiroshima piano and that her mother, Kumiko (Yoko Moriguchi), has donated it to Yagawa. The story starts to unfold when Nanako meets Yagawa at a “Hiroshima Piano: Peace Concert.” As the two grow closer, she finds herself searching to understand her family’s roots in Hiroshima, her grandmother’s past, the atomic blast, and the significance of Hiroshima pianos. -Why had her mother been so keen to leave Hiroshima? -What did her grandmother, Chieko, want her to know? -What drives Yagawa to selflessly devote himself to Hiroshima pianos? A world hidden from Nanako slowly reveals itself. To what end?

<Story>
Akiko Mikamo is a child of Hiroshima. Weaving audio and video recordings from interviews she conducted with her father Shinji Mikamo, archival images of the aftermath of the first use of atomic weapons against humanity, as well as re-enactments spoken in Hiroshima dialect, this film is woven together in an innovative documentary format to give you a rare first person account of the bombing of Hiroshima. This is a remarkable true story about the resiliency of the human spirit, compassion and forgiveness.
A teenage boy, Shinji Mikamo, was on top of his house roof at 1,200m (3/4 of a mile) from the epicenter at 8:15am on August 6, 2020, when the first atomic bomb exploded over Hiroshima. Severely burned and radiated, he was pushed forward by his father despite excruciating pain, looking for a rescue that didn’t exist. This was only the beginning of his agonizing journey… A true story of unbelievable survival, forgiveness, and love, inspiring the world for resiliency and world peace.
