“Why Not？”（1981/Japan/151 min）
Feudal-ruled Edo Period (1603-1867) is drawing to a turbulent end. Genji (IZUMIYA Shigeru) returns from exile in the US to search for his wife, Ine (MOMOI Kaori), the star of a circus freak show. In classic IMAMURA style, he draws viewers’ attention to the impact the upheaval of the times had on those from the lower classes and fringes of society. The film culminates with the masses, charged with revolutionary energy, crying out “Ee ja nai ka” [Why not?] as they dance their way over Ryōgoku Bridge.

“The Assassination of Ryoma”（1974/Japan/118min）
KUROKI’s “The Assassination of Ryōma” (1974) depicts the last three days in the life of SAKAMOTO Ryōma (1836-1867). At a time of intense social and political turmoil, Ryōma, NAKAOKA Shintarō, and the Ishin Shishi—a group of paramilitary political revolutionists fighting to end Japan’s feudal dictatorship—are portrayed as outlaws. KUROKI uses a rough black and white backdrop to highlight the revolutionists’ antagonism and comradery.
