The screening and talk show of “Deux fois” from The Zanzibar Films http://hiff.jp/en/archives/6623/ http://hiff.jp/en/archives/6623/#comments Sun, 25 Nov 2018 13:20:42 +0000 http://hiff.jp/?p=6623 “Deux fois”, from The Zanzibar Films, was screened at the Hiroshima City Cinematographic and Audio-Visual Library on November 25th at 13:30. It was followed by a talk show and the guests were Ms. Jackie Raynal, the director, and Ms. Samantha Leroy, from Cinematheque Films. The MC of the talk show was Mr. Hidenori Okada, whom is the chief researcher of National Film Archive of Japan.

This film stands out from the rest of the Zanzibar films for its avant-garde expression, such as the repetition of the same scene with slight differences. Before the screening started, the director, Ms. Raynal greeted the audience and said that this film was a sort of rebellion to the Zanzibar film works. She also shared stories about how she had become the director of this film and also about how her parents had greatly affected her sense of value. She also said that this film depicted her personally, and although there were a variety of comments and critiques on this film, how to understand and see it, is left to audience.

After the screening, Mr. Okada joined in for the talk show. Mr. Okada commented, “This is a very lyrical film in which you can see the intimacy of the couple.” As the conversation between the guests and Mr. Okada continued, the audience could see Ms. Raynal’s passion for this film by the episodes in such a way that she wanted to have a distance from the conventional Zanzibar film works to shoot a new style of film, and that she flew to Barcelona in Spain for the shooting on her own. It may look as though the film is very mystical while it consists of a continuity of unrelated scenes. But actually, it has a hidden concept that is leaving a lover in Paris to see a man in Barcelona. Ms. Raynal and Ms. Leroy told that the most attractive part of the film was that the audience could not know what was happening outside of the screen and there was no significant movement even in the screen.

From the audience, there was an opinion on misgiving of digitalization of films. Ms. Raynal said that she felt the vividness of the image of those times when editing was done by using scissors and glue directly on film itself has lost and she also felt nostalgic living in the modern society.

Would you like to unwind in the nature of Switzerland and the singing voice of the yodel? http://hiff.jp/en/archives/6621/ http://hiff.jp/en/archives/6621/#comments Sun, 25 Nov 2018 13:13:51 +0000 http://hiff.jp/?p=6621 On Sunday, November 25, 2018 at 1:30 PM, there was a movie screening and a talk show for, "No Business Like Show Business" at Yokogawa Cinema. This is a documentary film released in Switzerland in 2012, following the activities of a yodeling group and the lives of its members. During the screening, the magnificent nature of the Alps spreads on the screen, and the yodeler's beautiful singing voice resounded.
The lives of the yodelers start to move fast after they have won a contest. Their CDs have stormed the charts and they are bombarded with concert offers. But…

One of two directors who filmed this work, Director Martin Schilt visited to Japan as a guest for the first time from Switzerland.
The interviewer in the talk show was Ms. Mizuki Mazbara who lives in Switzerland, and the interpreter was Ms. Naoko Koizumi.

In negotiating the shooting of the yodeling group, the director persuaded, "I would like to make a movie that will convey the story of the yodeling group to their grandchildren and their grandchildren in 20 years." By filming for two years and spending time with the members, the director said, "I was able to experience Switzerland's unique direct democracy to cherish the opinions of everyone."
During the questioning and answering session, he explained about the position of yodeling:

"Yodeling is not only the means of farmers’ communication, but also sung at funerals and baby birthday celebrations. It is a religiously important entity."
Finally, regarding his next work, he has decided to produce a documentary film that draws nature through birds' perspectives such as crows, so he will visit around Japan everywhere to collect material after the Hiroshima International Film Festival.

“Day and Night” – Premiere Screening ! http://hiff.jp/en/archives/6615/ http://hiff.jp/en/archives/6615/#comments Sun, 25 Nov 2018 13:04:25 +0000 http://hiff.jp/?p=6615 The movie, "Day and night" was screened at NTT CRED Hall No.1 at 12:45 PM on November 25, 2018.

When Director Naohito Fujii and the leading actor Shinnosuke Abe entered, the venue was filled with applause. The talk show started with the movie commentator Yukiko Suzuki.
The two men are related to Hiroshima, Director Fujii has a relationship since the Damah Film Festival in Hiroshima and Mr. Abe came to Hiroshima since his starring work, "BAD BOYS", was shot in Hiroshima. "Day and Night" was premiered in Japan at the HIFF.
"I came to Hiroshima for the first time in six years. I was really happy when I learned it was chosen to be screened at this festival," Director Fujii said.
Mr. Abe said, "When I saw Director Fujii's film at Harajuku around the year 2010, I was very interested in it. Next, I saw his film, ‘Where is the better future of a fake town’, and I wanted to meet him." Mr. Abe told that he came to interact with director Fujii because he empathized with his energy for the film and the emotional expression of the characters.
In this work Mr. Abe served with the planning, drafting, and a popular actor, Takayuki Yamada served as producer.

"A draft was made while talking to each other over times and the values of what we feel appeared implicitly in this film," he said as he introduced the secrets and circumstances of production.

When the audience requested, "This film was shot in Akita. Please also shoot in Hiroshima.” Director Fujii replied, "I have thought of a plot trying to shoot in Miyajima around 2010. It is better to shoot in local areas than in Tokyo, so I would like to do it." And Mr. Abe said, "Until next time, thank you,” and the talk show ended with a big applause.

“Timeline”―”Love saves division,” the director smiled http://hiff.jp/en/archives/6610/ http://hiff.jp/en/archives/6610/#comments Sun, 25 Nov 2018 11:16:13 +0000 http://hiff.jp/?p=6610 The screening of "Timeline" at 10 am on Sunday, November 23 and a talk show with Director Nonzee Nimibutr were held at Yokogawa Cinema.

With Mr. Tomoko Nishizaki of Hiroshima Film Commission as the interviewer, a talk show with Director Nimibutr was held after the screening. The interpreter was Mr. Takasugi Miwa.

To the audience, who was touched by the last scene, the director said, "While I was watching in the audience seat, I just remembered many things at the time and cried." he said.

Letters and SNS are important keys in this work. The director replied immediately to the question as to which one he likes, "I like writing a letter because if it does not reach soon, all the more the feeling depends."

When asked about the motivation to produce this work, the director replied, "In Thailand, there was a political change in the previous year while I made this work and the citizens were divided. It was the era in which the love was not enough, so I decided to draw more with this work."

"How did the two leading actors embody the deep expression? What kind of director were you?" The director explained, "At the open workshop in advance, I explained the roles. We also resolved the questions by rehearsing and started shooting."

There are two plans for his next work. He said that the planning progress is the love story of a blind girl and a man who thinks of himself as a dog.

When the interviewer asked the reason why the director has invited the taxi driver who got in the previous day to the venue, the director said, "He was living nearly 30 years in Thailand and I am touched by that coincidence when I heard it." The driver also was surprised at the coincidence that "the director of the work I liked while watching Thai movies, even after returning to Japan, is indeed you."

After the talk show the venue was filled with happiness because of the behavior of the director who responded to all the audience's photograph shooting requests with a smile in the lobby.

Mr. Jiro Shindo, and Ms. Kaze Shindo, participate in a father and daughter talk show! http://hiff.jp/en/archives/6612/ http://hiff.jp/en/archives/6612/#comments Sun, 25 Nov 2018 07:04:45 +0000 http://hiff.jp/?p=6612 The screening of “Shimajima Kaisha” and a talk show was held in NTT CRED Hall No.1 at 10:00 am on November 25, 2018.

The movie was set on a small island in Okinawa. Ms. Aoi Ito acted as Umi, who has such a good ear that the slightest dissonant sound makes her head ache. Ms. Sakura Ando acted as the violinist, Yuko, who has come from Tokyo to the island for a concert. After showing the movie, there was a talk show session with Ms. Kaze Shindo, the director and Jiro Shindo, the producer.

In the talk show, Ms. Shindo, the director, spoke about how Ms. Ando talked about her history in which she had decided to quit a job and at the same time, Ms. Shindo lost an important person in her life.

They struggled with these complicated issues and Mr. Jiro Shindo assured Ms. Ito would help them to overcome their difficulties. However, the child actors of the movie lived lively at the site of the filming in Okinawa. Ms. Shindo and Ms. Ando decided to do their best in the movie because of the children’s participation in the movie. After the talk show session, conversation was moved to the story of the late Mr. Kaneto Shindo who was also a director. While Ms. Shindo spent the last six years of her grandfather’s life with him, she had been considering what is the meaning of life or death. She also said, “My grandfather taught me the meaning of life,” and she wants to keep making movies to which she and everyone can enjoy together after this.
